Notes from the desk of... [Muzik + Transport]

- Hot new record: Mahjongg - Raydoncong. Chicago uber-hipsters infuse Talking Heads songwriting with Afro-beat grooves and IDM production techniques and create a contagious record that runs the gamut from so-catchy-it-could-be-on-the-radio ('The Stubborn Horse') to "challenging" dance music ('BBG-9298' is in a 5/4 time signature) . This review, although a little overly dramatic, sums it up quite nicely.
- Things I have learned since becoming car-free, the short list:
- There's no need for a car in the city of Chicago.
- There's nothing more humbling that carrying a 24-pack of toilet paper on the bus.
- Bringing a kitchen chair on the bus and putting it down next to my seat seemed hilariously ironic.
- Editor's Retraction: In the March 30th 2005 issue of Fueled By Coffee, Craig Berman erroneously labeled Four Tet's new record, 'Everything Ecstatic' as a "let-down". This was, in fact, completely false. Although this record takes a decided step away from the 'folktronica' sound that appeared on previous recordings, it in fact takes a bold step into a more Detroit-techno sound with more evident Fridge influence. Simply put, this album slams like a mo fo. We regret this error.
- Speaking of Four Tet-- the Madvillain Remixes are unbelievably good. "Money Folder" was converted into a super-fly synth jam, amazing things follow. How long before Kieran Hebden is doing indie hip hop production? Hopefully soon.
